Chocolate Walnut Torte Cake
Description
½ c. shortening½ c. sugar
½ tsp. vanilla
4 egg yolks
1 c. enriched flour
dash of salt
1tsp. baking powder
⅓ c. milk
Cream shortening and sugar; add vanilla and egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each addition. Sift flour with salt and baking powder and add alternately with milk. Pour into two greased 8” layer pans.
Spread with:
Walnut meringue
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
⅛ tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. sugar
¾ c. finely chopped nuts
Beat egg whites with cream of tartar. Add sugar gradually. Beat until stiff peaks form. Fold in chopped nuts. Bake meringue topped cake at 300° for 1 hour.
Put layers together with:
Chocolate Whip
⅓ c. cocoa
¾ c. sugar
1½ c. heavy cream
Combine ingredients in a deep bowl and let stand in refrigerator for 1 hour. Beat until stiff. Heap on top and sides of torte in generous swirls.
