Description
6 cups flour
1/8 tsp. mahleb (should be kept in freezer)
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 yeast + 1/2 cup warm water (tepid) + 1 tsp sugar
1/2 lb. butter (or 1/2 butter, 1/2 margarine)
1-1/4 cups milk
3 eggs (beaten)
(Editor's note: Like many of my mother's recipes, this one assumes that everyone knows how to make choreg. It's a bread recipe and follows the same techniques.
She does combine the yeast, water and sugar together which starts to proof the yeast. Please let that stand for 10-15 minutes. This should show signs of life.
Essentially, mix the dry ingredients together, then the wet ingredients and knead like you would any other bread. Before putting it in the oven, it is traditional to braid the bread and give it a egg white wash. )
